Barragem da Aguieira

Aguieira Reservoir (Mondego River)

Marina at Montebelo aguieira

If you’re looking to get out of the villages for a few hours, the Aguieira Reservoir is an easy change of pace.  Set along the Mondego River between Viseu and Coimbra, it’s a wide, open stretch of water that feels much larger than you’d expect.

The Mondego is the longest river entirely within Portugal, running from the Serra da Estrela to the Atlantic.  For centuries it supported agriculture and connected inland towns to the coast.  The Aguieira Dam, built in the 1980s, created the reservoir you see today.

As the river widens here, the landscape opens into forested hills and long stretches of water with very little around them.  It’s not overdeveloped, which is part of the appeal.

The best way to experience Aguieira is from the water.  The main access point is Marina da Aguieira at the Montebelo where you can rent kayaks, paddleboards or small boats depending on the season.  From there, you can follow the shoreline, stop for a swim, or just drift for a while.  The nearby Montebelo Aguieira Lake Resort also offers direct access and rentals if you prefer something more straightforward.

Fishing is simple and informal.  The reservoir has carp, barbel, black bass, zander and some trout in cooler areas.  It’s less about guided trips and more about finding a quiet spot and taking your time.

If you’d rather stay on land, the area is also good for cycling.  There are quiet roads and rolling routes that lead down toward the lake, making it an easy addition to a half or full day outdoors.

Aguieira isn’t a polished destination, but that’s the point.  It offers space, quiet and a chance to spend a few hours outside without much structure.
