Schist Village- Aldeia da Pena

The Experience

Aldeia da Pena is a tiny slate-roofed village hidden in a steep valley of the Serra de São Macário which is one of the 22 schist villages in Portugal.  Built almost entirely from local schist and quartzite, its dark stone houses blend into the surrounding cliffs and vegetation. With only a few restored dwellings and very few residents (13 to be exact), Aldeia da Pena preserves a sense of quiet and unworldliness. The narrow paths, dramatic landscape, and the nearby stream create an atmosphere of seclusion and peace.

Why You'll Love

  • The drive is absolutely beautiful.
  • The village is everything we love about rural Portugal; virtually undiscovered, friendly locals and a fascinating landscapes.
  • The town has a middle-ages feel and is simply unlike anything you have likely ever seen.
  • Incredible meal if you are a meat lover.
  • While you can hike around the village, the village itself is an easy walk for almost all levels of mobility.
  • Discover the bizarre tale of a giant serpent who lived in a cave and why there are so many goats.

Helpful Hints

  • If you come for dinner, be sure to arrive before sunset for the spectacular view.
  • We highly recommend the restaurant Onde o Morto Matou o Vivo. The restaurant has been in the family for generations and is now managed by a delightful young couple.
  • The drive home is wonderful but not a good pairing with alcohol.
